Why This Matters

A 40-year skating community is asking to be heard.

The Scarborough Centennial Recreation Centre has been part of people's lives for over 40 years. For many seniors and regular skaters, it is far more than a recreational facility. It is a community, a friendship, and a weekly ritual they have cherished since childhood.

Skaters have long self-organized safely: leisurely skaters in the outer loops, figure skaters in the open centre. There has never been a serious incident. Recently, after complaints from a small number of occasional visitors, management imposed sweeping restrictions that effectively ban figure skating during public sessions, without consulting the community this rink exists to serve.

Canada is a figure skating nation, and this rink stands in a community with a proud legacy through the Scarborough Figure Skating Club, which has produced many world champions and Olympic medallists. The passion for this sport runs deep here, and it deserves to be protected, not punished.
